Academic Quiz team: Next practice: Thursday, May 17, 2012 from 2:45-3:45. Quiz team is, of course, optional, but we do plan on practicing through the rest of the year (and even a few times in the summer!), so if your child is interested, keep Thursdays on your schedule.
Graphing Calculators:8th graders (and any other students, really) are welcome (but NOT required) to purchase graphing calculators for the upcoming school year. I highly recommend TI-84+ Silver Edition calculators, since (1) I am awesome with them; (2) I can teach you to be awesome with them; and (3) they are required for 9th graders at DSHA, Marquette, Tosa West, and Brookfield East.
Scientific Calculators:Every student should have a scientific (or graphing) calculator. These cost around $9 and are available at almost any store. I use (and own several) Casio FX300s in the classroom; another good model is the TI-30. Scientific Calculators generally have additional buttons like square root, sin, cos, tan, and parentheses on them. To test if a calculator is scientific, press the following keys: 4 + 5 x 7 (enter or =). If the calculator says 39, it is scientific and suitable for my class. If it says 63, it is probably a four-function calculator and won't be what the student needs.
Brainbuster Standings: It is much easier to keep track of standings on the computer than on the back white board. Here are people who've scored a homework pass (or a portion) on the Brainbusters. For each, you score 0.5 for the correct answer for this situation and a bonus 0.5 for the general rule that will help you solve any similar situation.
(1) Towers of Hanoi: 0.5 for correct answer; 0.5 for general rule. 8th Grade: Emme 1, Frankie 0.5. 7th Grade: David H 1. 6th Grade: Nicky 0.5, Siobhan 0.5. (2) Quarters and Dimes: 0.5 for correct answer; 0.5 for general rule. 8th Grade: Emme 1, Molly 1, Stephanie 0.5, Steve 0.5. 7th Grade: David H 1. 6th Grade: Ian 0.5. (3) You're the cream in my coffee: 0.5 for correct answer; 0.5 for generalization/explanation. 8th Grade: Emme 1. 7th Grade: David H 1, Tim 0.5. (4) One of these things is not like the others: 0.5 for correct answer; 0.5 for numerical example. 8th Grade: Emme 1. 7th Grade: David H 1. (5) Washing the car: 0.5 for correct answer, 0.5 for another whole number example that works. Emme 1, Frankie 1. 7th Grade: David H 1, Tim 1. (6) Cryptogram riddle: 0.5 for correct answer, 0.5 for explaining the hint. 8th Grade: Emme 1. 7th Grade: David H 1. 6th Grade: Will S 1, Allison 1, Adam 1, Sarah 1, Nicky 1, Lauren 0.5. Maybe my very favorite thing about reassessment this year is that instead of kids thinking "I got a 96%; that's good enough", they think "I got 3 10s and 2 9s. What could I do to turn those 9s into 10s? And because of that, some students are becoming the best math students they possibly can be.
